This page is the contract for the browser pedal sim at nihilus.app (the “App”) and for Nihilus Host, the optional Windows zip on this site. By loading or using the App or Host you agree to these terms. Desktop VSTs and other NIHILUS products on nihilus.dev have their own notices.

Remote sessions (read this)

Optional remote control is peer-to-peer. Use it on your own phone, or a device belonging to someone you trust. This is not a cloud DAW or a VPN.

• After you confirm, the two browsers exchange connection details and then send pedal controls directly between devices.
• Each device can learn the other device’s IP address (and often a local network address). That is how WebRTC finds a path. If you do not want that, do not start a session and do not scan a QR.
• Guitar, vocals, and DSP stay on the host computer. We do not stream your audio through NIHILUS servers. There is no TURN media relay in this App.
• A short handshake uses a signaling websocket at apps.modulon.dev so the two browsers can find each other. Public Google STUN servers help discover addresses. Those parties see connection metadata (including IP addresses), not your audio and not your decrypted pedal graph.
• Pedal control messages on the peer link are encrypted (AES-GCM). The join secret is not sent to the signaling server in plain form.
• Anyone who scans while the QR is visible can move knobs, change routing, and start or stop the host chain until you hide the QR, kick them, or end the session. Do not leave the QR up if you do not want that.

NAT or firewalls can block a direct path. If that happens, the session will not fall back to relaying your controls through our servers. Pair on the same network when you can.

Jam sessions (read this)

Optional jam is a private peer-to-peer audio and video link between two people. Each person keeps their own board. The other person cannot move your knobs unless you check Allow control for them. Uncheck takes that back immediately.

• After you confirm, the two browsers find a direct path. Guitar and talkback leave on separate audio tracks. You pick guitar send quality (Jam 160 / Studio 256 / Max 320 kbps). That is what they hear, not the WAV you record on this computer. Dry guitar leaves only if you check Send dry guitar. Camera is video only. NIHILUS does not relay media. There is no TURN server.
• Each device can learn the other device’s IP address. If you do not want that, do not start a jam and do not open a jam link.
• Names you type for a jam live in this session only. They are not stored in this browser and are not uploaded.
• Video is encoded on your machine. You pick camera resolution and bitrate. You can turn video off. Guitar and talkback stay on their own tracks, so turning video off does not drop audio, and each side can mute guitar and voice separately. Camera bitrate drops first if the path is losing packets.
• On a phone, a plugged-in USB or Lightning interface is the guitar. The built-in mic is jam talk when the phone allows both. If there is only one mic, use Jam talk or Guitar board. Camera stays on either way.
• Headphones are strongly recommended. Speakers will feed a talkback microphone.
• Record together starts a take on both computers at once. Each side writes its own Studio files locally. Send my stems is an extra click. Those files move peer-to-peer while both of you are still in the jam. NIHILUS does not store them.
• If a direct path cannot be found, the jam ends with: Direct path failed. Audio and video never went through NIHILUS.

Host

Nihilus Host is an optional native program. It is not the browser live chain. Host talks to your interface driver: device names, analog channels, sample rates, and buffer sizes come from that driver. Unzip, run the binary, and the board opens in your browser at http://nihilus.localhost:18724/. Keep dist next to the binary. The live chain at nihilus.app stays a browser / Web Audio preview. Remote and jam QRs from Host open nihilus.app on the other device. That tab is the controller or jam peer; Host stays the audio path on this computer.

Windows uses ASIO (Chrome cannot open Steinberg ASIO). macOS uses Core Audio; make an Aggregate Device in Audio MIDI Setup if you need a multi-channel bank. Linux uses ALSA (PipeWire users usually see ALSA devices). JACK is not required. The posted binary is the Windows zip. macOS and Linux are build-from-source (Apple Silicon / x64). Intel Macs are not in v1.

No accounts. The Windows zip is unsigned. Windows SmartScreen, and Gatekeeper on a Mac build you compile, may warn. SHA-256 is on the Host download page. We do not ship Steinberg’s SDK. Host is provided “AS IS,” with the same no-warranty and liability limits as the App. Not a professional touring spec.

Privacy

The App does not create accounts, does not sell personal information, and does not require a login. Audio is processed in your browser on your machine.

What stays on your device:

• Board layout, MIDI maps, device picks, and similar preferences in this browser’s storage.
• User cabinet IRs in IndexedDB on this browser. Those files are not uploaded to NIHILUS.
• .nih2 presets and .nihjam recordings you save to disk. You choose where they go. Recordings stay on this computer unless you send stems during a jam.

What leaves your device when you use the App:

• The static site is served from our host (Hostinger). That host sees ordinary web logs (IP, user agent, which files were requested). Join secrets are placed in the URL hash so they are not sent to that host.
• Google Fonts loads typefaces. Google may see your IP and referrer for that request.
• If you start remote control or jam: Modulon signaling and Google STUN, plus the peer, as described under Remote sessions and Jam.
• If you follow outbound band links (Instagram, Spotify, and the rest), those sites have their own policies.

We do not run advertising trackers in the App. The service worker caches the App on your device so it can load offline; it does not phone home with your patches. Host zip downloads are ordinary file requests. The service worker does not cache those zips.

If you are in a region with a statutory privacy right (access, deletion, and similar), contact us through the NIHILUS channels on nihilus.dev. We cannot delete a copy of a patch that never left your browser.

Terms of use

License. BlurpleTech Inc grants you a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the App as hosted on nihilus.app, and to run Nihilus Host from the zip posted on this site. We may change, suspend, or stop the App or Host at any time. Public beta means features can break, move, or disappear.

Acceptable use. You will not use the App to harm others, to intercept communications you are not authorized to control, to probe or attack networks, or to violate law. You are responsible for who you pair with and for the volume you send to speakers, in-ears, and headphones.

Hearing and equipment. High gain, clipping, and sudden un-mute can damage hearing and speakers. Start quiet. The App is not a hearing protector, medical device, or professional touring spec.

Your content. Patches, names, and IRs you create stay yours. You grant us no license to them because we do not host them. Do not load files you do not have the right to use.

Third-party components. The App uses Modulon Engine, a networking add-on for signaling and WebRTC, Google STUN, Google Fonts, and your browser’s Web Audio implementation. Their terms apply to those pieces.

No warranty. THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, secure, or free of defects, or that peer connections will succeed.

Limitation of liability. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BLURPLETECH INC, NIHILUS, AND THEIR PEOPLE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF AUDIO, DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM THE APP OR A REMOTE SESSION, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE APP WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE APP IN THE THREE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (WHICH IS ZERO IF YOU PAID NOTHING). Some places do not allow these limits; in those places, our liability is limited to the greatest extent allowed.

Indemnity. You will defend and indemnify BlurpleTech Inc and NIHILUS against claims arising from your use of the App, your patches, your pairing with others, or your violation of these terms, except to the extent caused by our willful misconduct.

These terms are the agreement for the App. If a court strikes a clause, the rest still applies. Failure to enforce a clause is not a waiver. We may update this page; the date above is the current version. Continued use after a change is acceptance of the new terms.
